Literally "the way of the warrior", is a Japanese word indicating the samurai way of life, assimilable to the concept of knighthood in Europe.
Bushido is, as the author Inazo Nitobe wrote, the soul of Japan. Born in the Middle Ages but only used from the 17th Century, Bushido became the standard of conduct of the samurai under the Tokugawa shoguns. This traditional code stressed frugality, loyalty, martial art mastery and honor unto death. Following Confucian texts, Bushido was also influenced by Shinto and Zen Buddhism, allowing the violent existence of samurai to be tempered by wisdom and serenity.
The Bushido code is typified by seven virtues:Rectitude (義 gi), Courage (勇 yū), Benevolence (仁 jin), Respect (禮 rei), Honesty (誠 makoto), Honour (名誉 meiyo), Loyalty (忠義 chūgi).
