Piracy has existed in one way or another since man has been traveling by sea. Its history goes back more than 3000 years. One of the first records of piracy was in Homer’s “Odyssey.” But despite its long history, only a short period stands out in the popular imagination as the classic era of Piracy. This period is known as the Golden Age of Piracy, a brief but brilliant era between 1690 and 1730, it lasted 40 years and became the most prosperous era in piracy. This is the time period where we find the well known pirates, living legends in their time.
Characters such as Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, and Captain Kidd, seem larger than life and have become current names. Their history has influenced many writers and artists. During the same period “The Jolly Roger,” the pirate flag with a skull and crossbones, the difinitive symbol of pirates, appeared for the first time in maritime history.
